LOS 3184 Elwood Street Clean - a rainy day clean

Mad on this rainy morning? Well, seven of us were able to come along to Elwood shops (Glenhuntly Road) and nearby.
At least over 5 kg of litter didn't end up in the ocean: 600+ cigarette butts, 23 drink containers that should be returned if Victoria had a Container Deposit Scheme, lots of confectionery wrappers, lollipop sticks and Slurpee straws/straw packaging.
The heaviest rain help off till coffee time. 🐧🐧💚💚 Thanks everyone.

LOS 3184 Elwood Street Clean - Our Fourth Birthday

You might think we just got together yesterday to eat birthday cake.

Well we also collected 13 kg of litter from Elwood Village and nearby streets: 1795 cigarette butts (plastic) and lots of serviettes, confectionery wrappers and small bits of plastic, These will now not be blown or washed into Port Phillip Bay.

Since starting the first Love Our Street group, in Elwood four years ago, the group has collected 530 kg of litter - from the streets of Elwood, a suburb that takes pride in its special character. We would love not to do this at all, but we know every little piece of litter on the streets has the potential to harm wildlife on land or in the sea.

LOS 3184 has shown the way for other "off-beach" Beach Patrol groups. There are now 15 other Love Our Street groups in Melbourne and one at Cape Woolamai: 16 babies in 4 years is some growth in numbers. Still more are in various stages of planning.

Thanks to all our wonderful members who come along when they can to take practical action to improve our local and wider environment.

LOS 3184 Elwood Quick Clean 7 September 2019

Our main effort for September will be Spring Clean the City operating from 9 am and starting at Freshwater Place Southbank However, some people are unable to come, so we had a small group clean this week. Chilly day. Lots of polystryrene beads in the leaf litter - corner of Mitford St and Glenhuntly Road. Elwood Ploggers' leader had reported a spill in the vicinity recently, so this was likely to have been material that had already blown away from the main site before council came to  clean up. Collected what we could.

Hope to see a huge turn out at Spring Clean the City.

LOS 3184 Elwood - "Casual" Cleans in August 2019

Individual members reported five individual actions in the month since our last group clean, four of them using the Litter Stopper App. This means the group leader gets to hear about your efforts and that the data adds to our overall collection data. Some of the attention was along Elster Creek after heavy rain events when the creek overflowed its banks, depositing litter on the grassy flats. Great going everyone. Picture is just one person's clean near her home.

Love Our Street 3184 Elwood August Community Clean

Hopefully the last of the chilly collection mornings! (Sorry, no guarantees.)
Thanks to the 14 volunteers who came along today, including two visitors and another member from Beach Patrol 3184 - Love Our Street exists to protect the beaches from litter.

Great effort, but sadly everything in City of Port Phillip is now going to landfill'

At least the thousands of items of litter won't go to Port Phillip Bay.

Our volunteer efforts raised $375 in credits for the PP Ecocentre's Living Waters program: this current round will help local schools install water saving and improvement features in the catchment of Elster Creek.

Eight "Casual" cleans were reported by members and others in the community using the Litter Stopper App. Most of these were along Elster Creek after the rains at the start of the month that meant the creek broke its banks and litter was deposited on th egrassy verges. Other cleans were along Byron Street and at the foot of Point Ormond after winds blew litter onshore.

LOS 3184 Elwood July 2019 Community Clean

The sun shone to thank us for getting out of bed when it was so chilly!

Again, more litter was collected than three months ago when we were last in this area! 10 kg of litter; 17 bottles and cans and over 1500 cigarette butts (double compared to April when we were last in this zone). We might have expected butts to be fewer given the cooler weather sends more people indoors. Sadly not the case.

At least our efforts mean that these thousands of pieces of plastic and other litter will not reach Port Phillip Bay.

Our volunteer time raised $375 for the Ecocentre's Living Waters program to be share between water-saving and improvement projects for St. Columba's Primary School Elwood and St Kevin's Primary School Ormond.

LOS 3184 Elwood June 2019 Community Clean

Ten volunteers came along today, despite the chill. Thankfully, the wind had dropped and it remained fine.

It was great to welcome a new member and a young visitor. Thanks everyone for a great effort.

We collected over 14 kg of litter, including 16 drink bottles and cans, as well as 220 cigarette butts. Our efforts will mean the Ecocentre will have $300 to distribute to approved households and organisations as part of their Living Waters program, aimed at improving water quality in the Elster Creek Catchment.
